APP fraud is surging: how to protect your business now

Authorised push payment fraud is growing fast. Three steps that make your business a much harder target.

Here’s how to protect your business now

Authorised push payment (APP) fraud happens when criminals trick individuals or businesses into willingly transferring money to fraudulent accounts. These attacks often begin with compromised emails or stolen credentials and can unfold over weeks or months, which makes them very difficult to detect.

3 simple steps to better protect your business

1. Software protecting your computer
EDR (endpoint detection and response) and antivirus both protect endpoints, but differ in scope. Antivirus uses signature-based detection to block known threats. EDR adds real-time monitoring, spots suspicious behaviour, and lets you investigate and respond quickly.

2. A tool watching Microsoft 365 activity
Identity threat detection and response (ITDR) is a cybersecurity approach that identifies and addresses threats to user identities in services like Microsoft 365. It monitors authentication patterns, user behaviour and access activity to detect anomalies that may indicate compromise, such as session hijacking (bypassing multifactor authentication), credential theft and rogue applications running inside your Microsoft 365 environment.

3. Train your team
Technology is only part of it: your staff also have to recognise an attack when it reaches them. Security awareness training sends simulated phishing emails to your team. If a user interacts with one of these imitations, they are guided through training modules on spotting phishing next time. Reports show progress, risk areas and behaviour trends across your business.
