Run the test
The test downloads and uploads data to Cloudflare's nearest speed test server and times it. It measures the connection from this device, at this moment.
For the truest figure, use a computer plugged in with a cable, and pause large downloads, backups and video calls on the network first. Over Wi-Fi, the result shows the Wi-Fi as much as the line. On a fast line the test moves several hundred megabytes, so avoid running it on a capped mobile data plan.

What the figures mean
- Download
- How fast data reaches you: opening files from the cloud, downloads and streaming.
- Upload
- How fast data leaves you: sending files, backups to the cloud and your side of a video call.
- Latency
- How long a round trip to the test server takes. Lower is better, and it matters most for calls and remote desktops.
- Jitter
- How much the latency varies from one moment to the next. Steady is better: high jitter breaks up voice and video calls.
Compare the download and upload figures with the speeds on your contract or bill. A result well below them on a cabled computer is worth asking about, and so is a line that keeps up with its contract but no longer keeps up with the business.
