Industries

IT and telecoms for construction and quarrying

Offices, yards and quarries on one network and one phone system, with old systems replaced while the work carries on.

What the sector needs, and what we delivered

Every need below is something Odyssey delivered for a named client.

  1. Every site on one secure network

At Thomas Armstrong we installed ethernet at every site and built a private WAN protected by enterprise-grade firewalls, with new cabling, Wi-Fi and switching throughout.

  2. Old systems untangled while the business keeps running

Thomas Armstrong had several legacy phone systems, ISDN lines and ageing on-site servers, with little documentation. Over a year we replaced them with no unplanned downtime.

  3. One phone system for the office, the site and the road

A company-wide hosted Mitel system with softphones replaced the separate systems at Thomas Armstrong. At Dunhouse Quarry we re-cabled the extensions, added a hosted Mitel system and moved the lines from ISDN to SIP.

  4. Telephony that works with the business systems

Dunhouse Quarry's phones are integrated with its CRM, so sales and administration can handle more calls.

  5. Applications and email in the cloud

Thomas Armstrong's critical applications moved to Microsoft Azure and its email from Exchange to Microsoft 365, and we managed the other vendors involved.

  6. Managed IT for national contractors

Hathaway Roofing in Bishop Auckland, a roof and wall cladding contractor founded in 1967, moved to Odyssey's managed IT in 2026 with Microsoft 365 and endpoint protection. Finley Structures, the Newton Aycliffe steel fabricator behind frames for Hitachi Rail and Nissan, takes the same service.

  7. Precast and civils on one provider

Applebridge in Middlesbrough and its Hartlepool sister Retaining UK run networking, Microsoft 365 and mobiles from Odyssey. Rightcast, the precast stair maker, has run its Microsoft 365 and endpoint protection on Odyssey since 2011, and Lynx Precast in Ashington takes telephony and hosting.

  8. Quarries, asphalt and groundworks

Tynedale Roadstone, the Durham asphalt and aggregates business, runs hosted voice and networking on Odyssey. A W Cowan Groundworks has taken Microsoft 365 and hosting since 2014.

  9. Demolition and cladding

    A. Buckler, the Middlesbrough demolition and asbestos contractor founded in the 1920s, runs hosted voice and broadband on Odyssey, and AKV Cladding Products in Shildon takes Microsoft 365 and endpoint protection.

Questions people ask

Can our offices and yards be on one network?

Yes. A private WAN joins your sites on one network, separate from the public internet. At Thomas Armstrong we installed ethernet at every site and built a private WAN protected by enterprise-grade firewalls.

What about a quarry or yard where laying cable is impractical?

Point-to-point microwave links connect sites without laying cable, where a site is remote or digging is impractical. Microwave needs a clear line of sight between the two points.

Can old phone systems and servers be replaced while we keep working?

Yes. Thomas Armstrong's legacy phone systems, ISDN lines and ageing servers were replaced over a year with no unplanned downtime.

Can site staff stay on the office phone system?

Yes. A hosted Mitel system with softphones puts the office, the site and the road on one phone system, as it did at Thomas Armstrong.

Can our phones work with our CRM?

Often, yes. At Dunhouse Quarry we integrated the phone system with the existing CRM, so sales and administration can handle more calls. Tell us what you use and we will confirm.
